The Do’s and Don’ts of Lip Fillers
Ready to improve your smile and confidence with lip fillers? This popular cosmetic treatment provides natural looking lip enhancement quickly with no downtime.
Here at Polished MedSpa the fillers we use are JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®. These products are both made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). This gel-like substance is naturally found in your body and is the key molecule involved in skin moisture.
When injected, HA provides volume while also drawing moisture to the area - creating full, plump, hydrated lips. The volume helps with overall symmetry, and gives your lips more definition by creating a distinct border. Fillers are also a great way to smooth out wrinkles and lines around the mouth.
So how do you know which to pick? Or how much filler you may need (½ syringe, full syringe?)
Your provider will help! I take the time to advise you on which product will give you the best results - whether that is a focus on overall fullness, diminishing fine lines, or adding definition. The amount we use is also patient dependent. A ‘start low, go slow’ approach is often the best strategy for ensuring a natural result that you’re happy with.
Ready to get started? First things first - prior to getting your lip filler treatment, here are the do’s and don’t you need to know!
The Do’s of Lip Fillers
Drink water
Staying hydrated after your injections helps your body heal. It also enhances the effect of the hyaluronic acid. (Avoid using a straw for 48 hours though!)
Take Arnica tablets
Arnica is derived from an herb, and is a natural, homeopathic supplement used to reduce swelling and minimize bruising. You can even start taking them a couple days prior to injections.
Ice after treatment
Applying ice or a cold compress to your lips post-injection helps with swelling, bruising, itching, or any discomfort you may experience.
Research your provider
The skill of your injector is the most important factor to consider when you’re ready for lip filler! Choosing a credentialed, reputable, experienced provider is the way to go. While you may be tempted to save some cash with an inexperienced injector - you’re risking problems that arise from improper injection technique. Bumps, irregularities, lip asymmetry, along with excessive bruising, swelling, and bleeding. Not to mention an unnatural look that you’re unhappy with! The time, money, and emotional toll it takes to get your botched lips fixed is NOT something you want to put yourself through.
The Don’ts of Lip Fillers
Take blood thinners 7 days prior
Any supplements (like fish oil or St. John’s Wart) or medications (like Aspirin or Advil) that cause blood thinning will increase your risk of bleeding or bruising at the injection sites. Just pop a tylenol if you have a headache!
Massage or manipulate your freshly injected lips
Hey, you’re probably excited about your new lips and can’t keep your hands off of them. But you need to! Touch your lips as little as possible for about a day. It’s crazy how much we touch our faces without even realizing it, so it’s easy to forget. But you risk moving the filler and having it settle poorly.
Judge your lips the night of (or even the next day)
Your lips are very delicate and vascular - and experiencing some swelling and bruising is totally normal. If your lips look uneven or too big, don’t panic. It can take a couple days for the swelling to subside. Save yourself some stress and make sure you don’t have a big event or photos scheduled right after your appointment.
If you’re ready to take the journey to new, beautiful lips - book an appointment with me at Polished MedSpa! I’d love to help you achieve a beautiful smile today.
