Preparing for Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment: Everything You Need to Know

Ready to ditch the endless cycle of shaving, waxing, and plucking? Laser hair removal is the best way to achieve smooth, hair-free skin—permanently. At Polished Med Spa, we use the advanced BBL Forever Bare™ system, which delivers fast, comfortable, and effective results for all skin types.

Because laser hair removal isn’t a one-and-done treatment, proper preparation is key to ensuring optimal results. Below, we’ll walk you through how laser hair removal works, and the important preparation steps you should take prior to your treatment.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

At Polished Med Spa, we use BroadBand Light (BBL)™ technology, specifically Forever Bare BBL™, to safely and effectively reduce unwanted hair. This system delivers pulses of light energy to heat and disable hair follicles at the root while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed.

Since hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are needed to catch each follicle at its optimal stage. Most people require 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, to achieve their desired results.

We offer laser hair removal for a variety of areas, including:

✅ Small areas – Chin, upper lip, cheeks, jawline, sideburns, ears, fingers, toes, and belly button.

✅ Medium areas – Full face, underarms, back of the neck, inner thighs, and bikini line (extended).

✅ Large areas – Lower or upper legs, lower or upper arms, chest, abdomen, full bikini, full buttocks.

✅ Extra-large areas – Full legs, full arms, full back, and chest + abdomen.

How to Prepare for Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Following these pre-treatment steps will ensure the laser works effectively while minimizing potential side effects:

1. Avoid Sun Exposure for at Least Two Weeks

Tanned or sunburned skin is more sensitive and at higher risk for irritation and pigmentation changes. To protect your skin:

✔ Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks before treatment.

✔ Wear SPF 30+ sunscreen daily on the treated area.

✔ Skip self-tanners in the weeks leading up to your session.

2. Stop Waxing, Plucking, or Threading

For laser hair removal to work, the follicle must be intact. Since waxing, plucking, and threading remove the root, they interfere with treatment effectiveness.

✔ Stop these hair removal methods at least four weeks before your appointment.

✔ Shaving is okay since it only trims the hair while keeping the follicle intact.

3. Shave the Area 24 Hours Before Your Appointment

Laser hair removal works best when the hair is short but present at the root.

✔ Shave the treatment area the night before or the morning of your appointment.

✔ Avoid razors that cause irritation or razor burn.

4. Avoid Harsh Skincare Products

Certain skincare ingredients can increase skin sensitivity and should be avoided before treatment:

✔ Discontinue retinoids, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid on the treatment area at least three days prior.

✔ Avoid exfoliating scrubs and harsh cleansers for a few days before your session.

5. Stay Hydrated

Well-hydrated skin responds better to laser treatment and heals faster.

✔ Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.

✔ Moisturize regularly, but skip lotions on the day of treatment.

6. Skip Makeup, Deodorant & Lotions on Treatment Day

To ensure the laser works properly:

✔ Arrive with clean, dry skin.

✔ Avoid lotions, deodorants, oils, and perfumes on the treated area.
