Botox is a very common cosmetic treatment that’s been around for a while now. Despite how popular it is, many misconceptions still exist - which may make you hesitant to give it a try. Botox is often used as the umbrella name to describe the whole family of neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jueveau). But, Botox has the brand recognition and it’s been around the longest. If you’re on the fence about trying out Botox - let me separate out fact from fiction for you and set the record straight.

Here are 5 common myths about Botox - and why they’re wrong!

  1. Botox Will Freeze Your Face and Leave You Expressionless

We’ve all seen the over-exaggerations in pop culture references. But don’t let the horror pictures of overdone celebrities scare you! If you receive Botox from a qualified, experienced injector you’ll be pleased with the results. Your appearance will be natural - just a more softened, youthful version of yourself! You’ll still be able to express the full range of normal facial expressions. People will notice you look good, but won’t be able to tell you had a tox! Botox will give you a refreshed, relaxed face - not frozen or unemotive.

2. Botox Reverses Wrinkles

This myth is important to debunk in order to better manage your expectations. Botox can help soften current lines, but will not make them completely disappear. Tox’s help stop the lines you have from getting worse, and prevent new lines from forming. This is why preventative Botox is becoming more and more popular. Targeting the initial signs of aging is the best way to keep wrinkles from setting in later on. In general, it’s better and easier to maintain things than to fix them after they already have some wear and tear. Same goes for your face! If you already have deeper wrinkles that have set in - no worries! A tox will help keep them from deepening, but you’ll also benefit from some additional treatments to help smooth things out. You have plenty of options!

3. Botox is Toxic and Isn’t Safe

The main ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin type A. It’s derived from a bacteria - but no, you’re not going to get botulism. This is a purified protein that is very safe. These injections are one of the safest cosmetic treatments in the beauty industry. Not only have literally millions of people used Botox without adverse effects, but it’s been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use for almost two decades. If you work with a qualified practitioner who follows the recommended protocols for storage, dosage, and administration - you don’t have anything to worry about.

4. Botox is Only For ‘Older’ Women

While the market is still dominated by women, the popularity of Botox in men is definitely on the rise. In fact, the number of men getting Botox since 2000 has increased by 337 percent! Men also want the benefits of looking good and feeling more confident with their appearance. Also - people of all ages get Botox. As I’ve shared, starting early in your twenties is a great way to keep your skin smooth and youthful for years to come. Botox paired with a good skincare regime is an amazing preventative strategy.

5. Botox is Immediate, Permanent, Or Painful

No, no, and no! I’m sure some may wish their tox kicked in quicker and lasted a little longer, but it’s a temporary treatment! It takes several days (4-5) for results to appear, with the full effect setting in within 2 weeks. Results typically last 3-4 months. So every season, you should be making a new appointment for touch-ups. The needle used for your tox injection is very small. Most would describe the injection as only a pinch. Plus, the injections should be very quick! The treatment will be finished before you know it.
